Features of the French Occupation Policy in Tunisia (1881- 1956)

Abstract

This study aimed to highlight the features of the policies and administrative plans drawn up by the French occupation in order to achieve its colonial objectives in various fields The economic, social, and educational fields to identify the extent of their impact on Tunisian society. The significance of the study stems from its examination of an important aspect of modern Tunisian history, represented by exploring the policies of the French occupation and their effects on the country. The study also contributes to clarifying the methods adopted by the colonial power to consolidate its control over the Tunisian people. The study used the historical, descriptive analytical, and the inductive approach’s. The study concluded that France applied in Tunisia the so-called absorptive theory or so-called French policy to achieve its colonial goals, as well as its application of the policy of monopoly and taxation, which brought the country into an economic crisis because of the marginalization of national industries. The study also recommended to study the long-term economic and social effects of French colonial policies on Tunisian society, as well as expanding the study of the impact of European settlement on the demographic and agricultural structure of Tunisia, and promoting studies that reveal the relationship between colonialism and economic dependency in Tunisia and other African countries.
