The impact of livestock exports on the Sudanese trade balance during the period from 2000 to 2021

Abstract

The paper aimed to study the impact of livestock exports on Sudan's trade balance during the study period. The study hypothesized that livestock exports have a positive impact on Sudan's trade balance. The study adopted a quantitative standard approach by tracking time series of livestock exports during the study period, along with the Sudanese trade balance, using E-veows, a program specialized in data analysis using the Oriented Least Squares (OLS) method. The study reached a set of results, the most important of which is that livestock exports have a positive impact on Sudan's trade balance, due to the provision of a reasonable amount of foreign currency to meet external needs for goods and services. It also found that livestock exports have a comparative advantage compared to other exports. It is noted that the contribution to the balance of payments is relatively small compared to raw exports. Other commodities that affect the balance of payments are other than livestock exports. The paper recommended leveraging Sudan's comparative advantage in livestock exports and developing them. It also recommended developing exports through meat processing to achieve a greater value for the national product. And not relying on a specific commodity in exports in order to avoid any shortage that may occur in this basket, which would have a negative effect on overall exports.
