Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of social media in combating hate speech in Sudan by examining user attitudes and exploring the perspectives of media and digital communication experts regarding the role of these platforms in addressing this phenomenon. The significance of the study arises from the increasing prevalence of online hate speech and its detrimental impact on social cohesion, highlighting the need to assess the capacity of social media to mitigate its spread. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a survey method via a questionnaire administered to a sample of 50 social media users in Sudan. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with academic experts and specialists in media and digital communication. The findings revealed a high level of awareness among respondents regarding hate speech, along with their ability to differentiate it from freedom of expression. The results also indicated that digital awareness campaigns and reporting mechanisms for abusive content are among the most effective tools for curbing hate speech on digital platforms. The study recommended enhancing digital awareness programs to foster a culture of responsible social media use, as well as formulating policy and legislative frameworks to govern the digital space. These measures aim to limit the spread of hate speech while safeguarding freedom of expression within a framework of social responsibility.
